Letter 07: Home Is Where the Sidewalk Leads

This summer, I watched my two kids scooter off to Rancho Pool—no reminders, no adult supervision—just two siblings and a stretch of sidewalk. It was a small moment, but one that reminded me why we chose Burton Valley.

We’ve lived in two homes here, and in both, our kids have walked to elementary school. This fall, they’ll bike to Stanley Middle School together—gaining confidence, building independence, and growing up one ride at a time.

It’s not just the quiet streets and friendly neighbors that make Burton Valley so special—it’s the way everything connects. The Lafayette-Moraga Trail has been part of our family’s rhythm for years: first strollers and scooters, now solo rides to school or trips to downtown for fro-yo.

The trail links us to so much—Burton Valley Elementary, Rancho Pool, Stanley Middle, and even more importantly, to the kind of childhood that still happens outdoors.

In a world full of schedules and screens, it’s the walkability of this neighborhood that gives our kids real freedom. And that, to me, is the heart of home.

Living somewhere walkable changes everything.

Whether you’re raising little ones or looking for a place that connects community and convenience, neighborhoods like Burton Valley offer something truly special.

From the Heart,

Nin Tang
